Most students chosen to attend a UWC are selected by National Committees.
Nominated by National Committees:
If you are a Costa Rican citizen you should contact the Costa Rican National Committee:

Web Page:

If you are not a Costa Rican citizen you should contact the UWC National Committee in your home country. More information and links to all National Committees can be found at the United World Colleges website
uwc.org
The selection process varies from one National Committee to another to ensure that is applicable and relevant to the local culture and educational system. Usually there will be a written application and some form of interview, and you may also be asked to take part in group activities and community service, an examination and perhaps even a weekend camp.
Most students attend a UWC on a significant scholarship; contact your National Committee for further details. Students are selected for United World Colleges on the basis of merit, regardless of their financial circumstances.
The teaching languages at the UWCCR are English and Spanish, but a student does not need to be proficient in either language to apply.
International Quotient (IQ) Applications:
If you are ineligible to apply through a National Committee or if there is no National Committee in your home country, please contact Gregory Walsh, the Admissions Coordinator at the UWCCR: gregory.walsh@uwccostarica.org. The UWCCR considers International Quotient applicants both as boarding and as day students. There is an application on our website which must be completed in English or Spanish. Once the application is received, if it is reviewed favorably, an interview will be arranged either in person or by phone.
IQ Boarding students:
A small number of boarding students are admitted to the UWCCR through the International Quotient process. IQ boarding student applications are considered on a rolling basis. Applications received by 01 March of the year of entry receive first consideration.
Please be aware that no scholarships are available for IQ applicants so the family must assume the full costs for both years.
IQ Day students:
A small number of local expatriate students are admitted as day students. The IQ day student process has changed somewhat for entry 2011. Starting this year we will have an application deadline of 01 March. As a first step, potential IQ day students and their parents should schedule an initial and informal visit with the Director of Admissions between 01 October and 01 March. If an application is reviewed favorably the students and his/her parents will be invited to campus for a formal visit and interview. Applications for day students received after 01 March will be considered only if there are places remaining.
Please be aware that no scholarships are available for IQ applicants so the family must assume the full costs for both years.
Applicants should be:
- Committed to meeting all academic and co-curricular responsibilities, including the full IB diploma program and other activities that promote the philosophy and mission of the UWCCR
- Committed to participating fully in community activities and in community service
- Committed to becoming fluent in both English and Spanish
- Committed to developing tolerance of and appreciation for differences through living and sharing with peers from different cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Between sixteen and nineteen years of age as of September 1st of their first year. Moreover it is preferably that they are between sixteen and eighteen years of age.
Applicants should review the UWCCR Student Handbook before applying.
Please do not hesitate to contact the Admissions Coordinator if you have any questions or concerns.
